Mar 7:2 And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault. Mar 7:3 For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. Mar 7:4 And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables. Mar 7:5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? Mar 7:6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Mar 7:7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. Mar 7:8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. Mar 7:10 For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death: Mar 7:11 But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. Mar 7:12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; Mar 7:13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye. (KJV) Tradition has no place in the gospel,.. Only the law and its fulfilment in Christ has any proper meaning in the New Testament. Traditions in their making are equivalent to putting a patch from a new cloth onto the old,.. or new wine into old bottles. The rent is made worse and the bottles burst. The law of God is complete and good and now fulfilled - showing that all born again Israel may follow in that obedient example of Christ. By requiring the keeping of traditions that are not lawful, Jesus shows them that the law is the only real remnant of doctrine upon this manner - that adding to the law invalidates its original worth as if it were initially made incomplete: but Jesus states explicitly it is not the case. It is a sad thing that the Jews at any time had this tradition of "corban". That a child can tell his parents that he has no responsibility toward his parents, but that anything the child should do for them should be "riches" - (corban - properly the temple treasury), and a gift to them. That the tradition should make the child free of any responsibility to his or her parents. The commandment of God, to honour ones mother and father, (so that you might live long in the land) is one of the cornerstones of what we consider a compassionate society. If children should care for their elderly parents, would not they show their children to do the same for them? Children without grandparents are much worse off in my view. I have many happy memories of my grandparents and would wish any children to have such fondly remembered times -and for their children too. Regarding verse 12, It would seem to say that by this oath which the child has said, that by the tradition the elders allow the child (send him forth) to do no more for their parents from the commandment, but only upon their pleasure. - This is not preventative as disallowing them from doing anything, but it is almost as if anything they actually do is equal to an offering in the temple. So the commandment is not only of no effect, but is covered by a fake offering as an excuse. This has a modern analogy found in churches all over. - Tax deductable charitable giving. If a person donates money to a corporate charity in some countries, (like the USA) the gift is tax deductable. They are refunded their offering from the government, and their giving is nullified. - They give nothing but have stolen the gift from others who paid their taxes. In the UK, we have "gift aid" where an extra third is added to a donation to a charity by the treasury. What's worse, is that the most often donated commodity in this manner within the church is the church itself. It is "sold" as a corporation under government regulated charter contracts. A church does not pay taxes at all. But a corporation that accepts a tax deductable gift under articles of corporation is a "business" even if it is a charity. It has a board of directors, or a chairman, treasurer, etc. What people think of as their church is a corporation instead. The head of that church is the artificial legal entity under its corporate charter, and as far as the state is concerned, that "church" has to follow the states rules, and only exists whilst the government gives its permission top exist if it keeps the terms of its contract. Whilst people believe the head of their church is Christ, the law sees it differently. The state is the head, its lifeblood money, and the members of the church under the charter are responsible. Get a place on the board at your peril! Whilst people within corporate churches believe that to the government, that which they do is "corban" and hold to God as their head, The state is of the completely obverse opinion. whatever God is profited is corban, and they need do nothing to honour Him - even if it means arresting and or prosecuting the church for breaking it's contract that 99.9% of them have never been made aware. These contracts are entered into openly - Thus, the church is as guilty as the state and never realise it. TV evangelist's and money grabbing murdering liars quote these verses and take the money from the mouths of the poor with messages "Send your gift now, and receive a hundred fold!". They teach you will get a hundred spondoolicks for every one you send them. Desperate people beware. Jesus means that his teachings, the gift of God, The Holy Spirit and the fruits of a Christian life are priceless. The Bible in context, though the world's most readily available printed work, is perhaps the most valuable thing you will EVER own. In eternity, you will thank God for it forever. - How much more then the other gifts? And those are just those we receive in this life, and after, everlasting life in Christ. Didn't Jesus say, Luk 10:24 For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
